Education

Quality, commitment and accountability – these are just a few of the words that reflect the education system for the Dumas area. When civic, business and education leaders applied their talents to address the education needs of the area’s youth; they developed a blueprint that has changed the learning landscape forever.

In January, 2000, a dream became a reality in Moore County. Amarillo College established a permanent campus in Dumas to help promote learning and cultural activities. AC had a presence in Moore County for many years prior to 2000, offering classes at Dumas High School. But the new campus, owned by the taxpayers of Moore County, gives local residents a college they can call their own. In 2013, a new Career & Technical Training Center was constructed at the Dumas Business Park to help provide needed workforce and industry training programs. This innovative project, utilizing land donated by the Dumas EDC, will help attract new employers as well as provide new opportunities for the area youth.

In an effort to maximize on the proactive nature of the Dumas citizenry, the Dumas Education Foundation Inc. (DEF) was founded. Since its inception in 1994, the Foundation has distributed several funds to the Grants-To-Teacher program to support innovative projects and creative teaching approaches in Dumas schools. In addition, DEF has distributed over $320,000 in funds to students wishing to seek a higher level of education or a vocational agenda.

The Quality Education for Students (QUEST) program is a local program that guarantees access to higher education for students of Dumas High School. QUEST guarantees payment for tuition, fees, and books at Amarillo College through grants as a last in assistance program. Students enroll in the QUEST program during the 5th grade and agree to maintain good grades, good behavior and good attendance throughout their school career. Arts & Recreation

If you think Dumas has Western flavor – you’re right. We are proud of the colorful cowboy heritage that resonates in our warm hospitality, sense of adventure, art and traditions. From an Art Center to a Zip Line, Cadillac Ranch to Lake Meredith folks are always finding new events and activities for our community to experience. There never seems to be a weekend that doesn’t have some event occurring, and the kids have more to do than they have time.

Our vacations can take us to beautiful locations in our own community, or to mountains within 3 hours drive. The festivals are great, the people are fun and the only thing preventing folks from finding enough to do is their own refusal to get up! Whether you prefer to be in the stands or on the field, Dumas has numerous opportunities to work up a sweat and get dirty! From mud volleyball to cricket, we are sure to have some activity to get you up and out!

Dumas offers plenty of opportunities to connect with nature through camping, horseback riding, fishing, hunting or bird watching. And, the city’s extensive park system provides attractive, well-maintained areas for tennis, swimming, biking, jogging and even hitting the water slides. Or, drive a short distance in any direction and find yourself facing a zip line, hitting the ski slopes or crashing through waves on a jet ski. We don’t discriminate against your activity of choice; we just want you to enjoy life at your speed. Catch a rodeo or watch a Baja Race, just know that we have more to offer than you could even imagine.

The Dumas region is readily connected to the global marketplace with multi-directional rail and highway infrastructure. The community’s unique geographic location makes it a direct route to productivity and profit. Its strategic central U.S. location is ideal for serving as a transportation and distribution center for to all points.

Located just 45 minutes north of Interstate 40 along U.S. 287 and U.S. 87, major 4-lane highways, Dumas is a large part of The Ports to Plains Corridor project; a multi-state and international effort to expand the transportation systems from Mexico to Canada. By creating a 4-lane highway system that connects to Interstate 25, and continues through the Theodore Roosevelt Expressway into Canada, the corridor is the fastest growing trade corridor in the United States. The intermodal initiative will transform the region into the major trade route from Mexico to Canada and making Dumas a central distribution point. The Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) rail passes through Dumas where their top feeder system, Texas Northwest (TXNW) builds trains in their 6000 car system daily. TXNW has access for numerous firms requiring immediate rail access in Dumas and has partnered with Dumas EDC in helping attract new firms.

The Moore County Regional Airport has a new 6000 foot runway that can accommodate regional jet traffic and boasts some of the best fuel prices around. The airport is home to the Dumas Business Aviation Park to accommodate those aviation firms seeking a low cost location with no local regulations or development fees.

Amarillo International Airport has air service from United, American, Southwest and Delta Airlines with daily airline departures and arrivals to and from Dallas, Houston, Denver and Las Vegas.
